DENVER, Colo. – A new poll finds that a majority of Colorado voters do not support creating the state government option and do not trust the state government to design an effective health insurance plan as much as the free market. The poll of 800 likely voters in Colorado, conducted by Locust Street Group for Colorado’s Health Care Future, reveals that a majority of voters want state lawmakers to build on and improve what’s working in health care rather than start over with a new state government-controlled health insurance system such as the state government option.
The poll’s key findings include:
- A majority of Colorado voters do NOT support the state government option (only 34 percent support).
- 73 percent of voters prefer for lawmakers to BUILD ON Colorado’s health care system rather than create a new state government option.
- Voters are particularly CONCERNED about the impacts of the state government option on access to quality care (77 percent), jobs/economic growth (73 percent), and costs (72 percent).
- 79 percent of voters are UNWILLING to pay more in health care costs to finance the cost of the state government option.
In fact, the poll shows that during this critical time Colorado voters want state lawmakers to focus on jobs and the economy: 66 percent of voters ranked the economy and jobs as one of their two most important issues for the state government to address. Only 32 percent of voters believe health care is among the two most important issues for state lawmakers to address.
Lawmakers should focus on the issue most important to Colorado residents rather than creating a state government-controlled health insurance system that will increase costs and threaten access to care.
Poll Methodology: Locust Street Group, on behalf of Colorado’s Health Care Future, surveyed 800 likely voters in Colorado (balanced to current state demographics by gender, age, race, income, education, and political ideology). The survey was fielded online from January 8 to January 24, 2021.
